New Article: Hugh Jackman on ‘The Greatest Showman,’ Saying Goodbye to Wolverine and Turning Down Bond

Hello everybody,

The brass at 20th Century Fox and a cadre of financiers were descending on New York City to decide whether or not to give the greenlight to a musical biopic about circus impresario P.T. Barnum — one that by 2015 had been in development for seven years. In order to convince the studio, director Michael Gracey and star Hugh Jackman had arranged to do an elaborate read-through, with several Broadway greats playing supporting parts.

"There was just one catch. Twenty-four hours before the presentation, Jackman had gone to the doctor to have a basal cell carcinoma removed from his nose.

“‘Michael, I have some good news and some bad news,’” Jackman said on the phone to Gracey. “The operation was a huge success; that’s no problem. But I’m in the surgeon’s office, and he’s not letting me leave until I call you and say there’s no way I can sing tomorrow.”

Gracey’s heart sank.

Fearful that people wouldn’t make the trek across country if they found out their leading man would need an understudy, the two men conspired to wait to share the bad news until everyone was seated. At the run-through, “Newsies” star Jeremy Jordan did the singing for Jackman while the actor mimed the stage directions. Concerned that if he burst into song, he would split his stitches, cause an infection and possibly disfigure a face that has sold millions of movie tickets, Jackman tried to stay silent. But at one key moment, when a power ballad titled “From Now On” was to be sung, Jackman strode to center stage, spread his arms wide and held forth with his burly, rafters-shaking baritone.

“Everyone jumped up on top of their seats,” recalls Gracey. “It was a euphoric moment. The man that everyone had come to hear sing was finally singing. That’s when we got the greenlight.”

On Dec. 20, the movie that Jackman willed into being and ignored doctor’s orders to deliver finally hits theaters. The actor’s $84 million passion project represents a big risk for Fox, which will spend more than $100 million to market and release the film worldwide. It arrives without having been road tested on Broadway, and with the rare, modern-day exception of “La La Land,” original movie musicals like “I’ll Do Anything” or “One From the Heart” have wilted on the big screen. Moreover, “The Greatest Showman” is unabashedly nostalgic. Whereas “La La Land” was grounded in a darker realism, this film is bright and ebullient, infused with a let’s-put-on-a-show spirit that’s been largely missing from cinema since the days of Judy Garland and Gene Kelly.

“It’s a risky proposition,” admits Stacey Snider, chairman and CEO of 20th Century Fox. “But I do believe it’s the antidote to these tough times. It was our goal to anticipate the zeitgeist and speak to the turbulence of our era by offering something that was joyful and optimistic at the holidays.”

On a blustery late-summer day, Jackman walks into Perry St, a posh SoHo eatery overlooking the Hudson. Even dressed down in a gray T-shirt and cargo pants, the six-foot-three actor with the gleaming smile and jet-black hair is every inch the movie star. He cuts a figure so dazzling that even here, a gathering spot for 1 percenters, patrons will glance over at the corner table where Jackman parks himself, hoping to catch a glimpse of the actor in an unguarded moment."

Hello everybody,

Hugh Jackman has a lot to celebrate! The star was nominated for a Golden Globe for his portrayal of P.T. Barnum in the movie “The Greatest Showman”… before it even hit theaters.

“Extra’s” AJ Calloway caught up with Hugh, who said he is feeling “fantastic” after his nod for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role.

“It’s been a seven-and-a-half-year journey. The studio took a bet on this original movie musical that hadn’t been done for 23 years… I feel so many great stories about this, the fact that we got that recognition today, means everything.”

Hello everybody,

Hugh Jackman believes that the success of La La Land is influencing a musicals comeback!

“Thankfully musicals are coming back. I’m thrilled that La La Land did so well, I think a lot of people saw La La Land who may not normally have seen it,” the 49-year-old actor expressed while speaking at the BAFTA: A Life In Pictures event hosted by film journalist Edith Bowman on Sunday (December 3) in London, England.

Hugh‘s very own musical The Greatest Showman is set to open over Christmas.

“When we first approached the studio about doing this [in 2009], there had not been an original movie musical in 23 years. It was considered just too risky,” Hugh added (via Deadline). “So anyway, it’s a great thrill to be in it.”

Project Updates: Hugh Jackman Rumored To Return As Wolverine For Avengers 4

Posted on 09 Dec 2017 by Admin
Projects icon

Hello everybody,

We may get to see Hugh Jackman as Wolverine one last time.

While Hugh Jackman has retired from the role of Wolverine following the recent Logan movie, the possible sale of Fox Studios to Disney may bring back Hugh Jackman as the berserker-raging, adamantium-wielding mutant for Avengers 4.

AICN news actually reports the Disney and Fox deal is already done, which means Wolverine, the X-Men, Deadpool, Fantastic Four and related characters are now back at Marvel.

"Worth a note is that Fox Studios hasn't announced a replacement actor for Wolverine, and Wolverine is not appearing in any of the upcoming X-Men or Deadpool movies, which obviously leaves room for Hugh Jackman to return as Wolverine for Avengers 4.

It's possible with the sale of Fox Studios, that Disney could simply use Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in a cameo for Avengers 4 as a nod to the fans and a way of letting them know the X-Men are now in the MCU.

Anthony and Joe Russo are still filming The Avengers 4, so if the Fox and Disney deal is already done, Wolverine is now all to their liking.

In addition, AICN also suggests to look for the Fantastic Four's Baxter Building and possibly the X-Mansion in Avengers 4."

Hugh Jackman will discuss his career at a Bafta Life in Pictures event hosted at the organisation’s London headquarters on Dec 3. Jackman’s breakthrough film roles came in 1999 with Australian independent titles Paperback Hero and Erskineville Kings. He was awarded an Australian Film Critics’ Circle Award for best actor and an Australian Film Institute nomination for best actor for his performance in the latter.

"Jackman gained international attention for playing the character Wolverine in X-Men (2000). He went on to reprise the role in X2 (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) and in 2013’s The Wolverine.

After appearing in 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, Jackman starred in the third and standalone final Wolverine film, Logan, which was released in 2017 to critical acclaim.

New Article: Hugh Jackman was offered a part in Neighbours... and reveals why he turned it down

Posted on 02 Dec 2017 by Admin
Hugh icon

Hello everybody,

Hugh Jackman could have been a Ramsay Street resident if things had been different, as he was offered a job on Neighbours years ago. The actor has revealed that he was offered a role on the Aussie soap, but turned it down in favour of his training.

"Speaking to TV Week, he said: "I was offered a job on Neighbours which was a very successful soap opera in Australia at the time the same weekend that I was offered a place at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts which was a prestigious drama school.

"So I had the choice of, 'Do I go and work as a working actor on a two-year contract, or do I go and study?' I was 24 [years old] so I wasn't young in acting terms and I really didn't know what to do.

"I thought, 'Two years on a soap opera is not going to make me confident to go to the Royal Shakespeare Company in London and audition, so instead I went to study'."

Thankfully, Hugh's decision paid off as he went on to land his breakout role as Wolverine in the X-Men film series, as well as taking on lead roles in blockbuster films such as Les Misérables, Real Steel, and Van Helsing."
