New Article: Hugh Jackman scores Oscar nomination for 'Les Mis'!

You've likely heard about the dramatic crash diet that actress Anne Hathaway embraced for her role of Fantine in "Les Miserables," but it turns out that her co-star Hugh Jackman went through a similarly punishing experience.

Both stars received nominations today for their phenomenal work in the film — with Hathaway nearly a lock for Best Supporting Actress while Jackman will likely lose out to Daniel Day Lewis in the Best Actor arena.

The 44-year-old nevertheless is likely thrilled to receive his first nod from the Academy, especially after all the hard work that went into preparing for the much-beloved role.

"Weirdly, this was almost more physical in a way than an 'X-Men' movie!" Jackman told Vulture. "I was spending even longer in the gym — like three hours in the gym — because I needed to be as emaciated as possible, but still keep some muscle on for Jean Valjean."

Jackman also altered his diet, dropping dairy and even breaking his beloved coffee habit to help maintain the booming voice of Valjean.

"He's actually written as an ox of a man, so I had to eat seven times a day with no carbohydrates, but then you had the exercise. I'd wake up and do 45 minutes of card on an empty stomach, eat something, go to the gym, do a vocal warm-up, and then after lunch I'd go back to the gym again. Otherwise, I'd just become skin and bones."

Jackman's demanding physique on "Les Miserables" also prepared him for "The Wolverine," which was filmed immediately afterwards.

"It was brutal getting there," he told Jeff Probst. "And by the way, I asked the company if they could just ... you're spending millions on special effects, just help me out. I want to eat pizza and drink beer. And they said no. For that kind of body, I had to go up in weight, big, lift big and heavy, then strip down.”

The actor is thankful that both demanding roles are now behind him, saying just before the end of 2012 that he's now "eating whatever he wants."

Project Updates: Les Miserables is tuneful theatrics!

REVIEW: If you're already a fan of hearing the people sing the songs of angry men, you'll be eagerly awaiting the release of Tom Hooper's (Oscar-winning director of The King's Speech) cinematic rendition of hugely popular stage musical Les Miserables.

It answers the question "Can one successfully bring theatre to the big screen?" and drops the guillotine on any qualms about the casting of actors-before-singers Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe.

Victor Hugo surely never imagined his 1862 French historical novel about revolution, grace and impoverished death would be set to song, but ever since the mid-80s we have been flocking to West End productions, singing along to the CD, and performing the musical numbers at school. (There have been film versions of the book, but apart from concert movies, this is the first film of the musical.)

The story starts with Jackman's Jean Valjean being released from 19 years' imprisonment for stealing a loaf of bread, and Inspector Javert (a typically earnest Crowe) is established as he who will hunt Valjean for the rest of the story.

Valjean's ensuing "rehabilitation" from prisoner to prominent townsman brings him into contact with the desperate Fantine (Hathaway, whose performance of signature song I Dreamed a Dream is a tour de force) and later Fantine's daughter Cosette (Amanda Seyfried from Mamma Mia whose singing voice, though tuneful, unfortunately evokes the Chipmunks). The actors sang live on set and Hooper has employed a more theatrical method of filming many of the core numbers in one long shot, which is impressive as Eponine sings with a broken heart and Fantine teeters on the brink of death without the camera cutting away.

Alleviating the bleakness are Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter as the fetid, dishonest Master and Mistress of the House. The young children are terrific, the chorus of young men at the barricades sing like a choir of baritone angels, and the biggest surprise of all is the extremely accomplished Eddie Redmayne (My Week with Marilyn) as Marius.

Reminiscent of Moulin Rouge in its style and bombast but without the twinkle in its eye, this is a faithful adaptation with only a few shifts in dialogue and one new song (created specially by the original composer). Somehow the medium of film makes the narrative clearer, a blessing considering the film's length, its only downside. But overall, it's a good show.

New Article: Hugh's Holiday Strolls with Children and dog!

Posted on 29 Dec 2012 by Admin

He had said his family 'really goes for it' at Christmas with 'stockings and presents and just eat and eat'.

So it made sense that super-fit Hugh Jackman also encourages energetic strolls with his children to counter the festive feasting.

The recent Golden Globe nominee was spotted enjoying a Christmas day stroll through New York's Hudson River Park with his son Oscar, daughter Ava, and French Bulldog Dali.

Hugh attempted to go incognito with his face covered in sunglasses and a brown beanie, but his adorable two-year-old pup turned just as many heads in his handsome little orange collar.

And though the handsome leading man covered his defined pecs in a black parka - courtesy of his 2004 film Van Helsing - he opted out of dressing Dali in his winter coat for their outing.

The family dog was named by Jackman's 12-year-old son, who is evidently a big fan of the artist Salvador Dalí.

And much like the Spanish painter, Oscar bundled up in an eccentric ensemble consisting of a green knit beanie, blue-and-orange coat, green-striped trousers, and heavy duty snowboots.

Meanwhile, seven-year-old Ava wore white mittens, a black puffy coat, pink hoodie, black leggings, and black riding boots.

New Article: Hugh Jackman's Les Miserables bond!

Posted on 25 Dec 2012 by Admin
Hugh icon

Hugh Jackman says he experienced the biggest ''feeling of ensemble'' with his 'Les Miserables' co-stars, more so than on any other movie he's starred in.

Hugh Jackman bonded with his 'Les Miserables' co-stars more than on any other movie he's done.

The 'Wolverine' actor - who plays Jean Valjean in the film adaptation of the musical - insists he had the biggest ''feeling of ensemble'' he's every experienced while shooting a motion picture, partly because the cast were entering the ''unknown'' by filming a musical movie.

He said: ''I don't think I've ever been a part of a movie where it had such a feeling of ensemble. We really bonded as a group, I think partly because of the nature of the material, partly because we had nine weeks of rehearsal - which very few movie companies or directors will allow access to have. And I think also, we were all not only fans of the musical, but we were also aware we were doing something that's never been done before.

''It's a little nerve-wracking, it's partly an unknown - but there's nothing like that to bring everyone together.''

Hugh featured alongside a star-studded cast including Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter in 'Les Miserables', and he counts himself as ''incredibly lucky'' to have starred in the film.

When asked if there was a particular day of filming which stood out to him, he added to ''The very last scene of the movie. It was shot right near the end. I was standing with Anne Hathaway, who's a great friend of mine, and I was watching her because she was losing a lot of weight at the time for the particular part in the movie.

''And I just looked out ... there was the barricades, 300 extras, and this massive big field where we were singing the ending. It just struck me how incredibly lucky we all were to be in a musical, because they don't happen very often.

''And also incredibly lucky to be singing live, because that happens even less often on a film. Just thinking about how close we all had become. And the music ... it was hair on the back of the neck time!''
